Today: a bizarre occurance in MAD airport.
Air Europa jets are lining down the jetties usually reserved for competitor and flag carrier Iberia in their ridiculously large terminal building.
Air Europa already released a few statements and it seems like a rival airline from somewhere else in europe was already interested in buying it. Meanwhile Iberia must be racking in some cool parking fees as their closest opponent bleeds.
It might have more to do with the airport than Air Europa's financial situation, because I also saw Aeromexico's flight is departing from iberias terminal; also a bizarre thing.
Bizarre as it may be; the amount of Air Europa jets is so significant, my flight from Vigo was not assigned a jetty; the forceful tone of the captain as she announced this mild inconvenience let me know it was an unpleasantry she was becoming more exposed to.
Unusually empty
As for unpleasant exposures... Madrid airport is very different to how it was three weeks ago. Everything is closed, except one restaurant which i packed...and my seven hour layover is looking more and more annoying as more time passes. It still feels like the decisions taken around covid are more linked to security theatre than anything else. It relies on the passengers good-will, and I leave somewhat convinced that Mexico is taking better steps than Spain is.
Another fucked airline

And we'll have another round of consolidations, the only question is who is going to reverse-merge with whom? UnitedAmerican, SouthwestDelta, UnitedDelta, etc.

usually there’s some common DNA... Alaska-SWA... maybe?
Delta thinks their poop don’t stink-- they’ll never get along with anybody.

I didn’t know Air Europa still existed - frequently seen on US game shows in the late 90s.

Until Southwest mounts a hostile takeover and rebrands themselves as Delta, adopting some bland, inoffensive new logo and livery that pisses all over both companies' legacies.

I’ve used it a couple of times, I don’t like 737s as much as A320s, so I’m not fond of using it.

SW has zero interest in delta. Or anyone right now, At least not until they’ve driven everyone into the dirt. They’re coming for miami, o’hare, houston international, and moving in to crush the united and AA pullback....
Alaska is doing well, delta too for now.

Ive got a friend who's a flight attendant for Delta out of Atlanta, from what I understand, the company's really been going out of their way to minimize layoffs as much as possible, even though their PPP money has all run out. Seems like they're trying harder than others to hold on to their staff

It’s true. They’ve done exactly what SW has, and to some extent others. Offer early retirement buyouts at some degree of pay reduction for X years, plus offer reduced pay extended leaves of absc ense. Also reduction of guarantee pay to minimums. After that, it becomes a talk with unions to reduce anythign further.
The issues are asking for pay-cuts without any future “snap-backs” etc. Because all that does is repeat a cycle that every economic downturn forces every time and in the end, the pay and benefits have never increased to counter what things were back in the day. For example, everything money waise spoken of HAS to be set against the cost of inflation calculator. Correcting past money to todays money or things dont make proper sense.
A senior pilot at Northwest in 1983 made $150k a year....in todays money that is $300,000+ to fly a domestic 100 seat jet. Regional pilots make 100k today to fly 75 seaters, and they just got the flight hours cut, so theyre not mkaing that and they dont have a future goal to trigger any sort of snap-back of work minimums.
Today’ s mainline captains make that $3 00k to fly 175 seats and big internationals . So in fact historic pay has been cut, plus cost of living has historically gone up as well. So they are trying hard to not have that cycle revisited because last time, it was a horrible PR set-back for the companies as well. United stripped all pensions after 9/11. Any big changes will have to come with some sort of share in the recovery profits if they want the workforce to ‘help’. That is 100 years of aviation talking.
I recommend reading Hard Landings to understand the whole past industry, so the future industry can be seen clearer.
